The Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (INDS) degree program for traditional students finds its basis in the liberal arts belief that the individual is situated in a complex and fascinating world where ideas, experiences, and academic disciplines intersect. This degree, then, offers students the opportunity to design a unique and flexible curriculum to meet their personal and professional goals. In addition to selecting complementary courses and disciplines that can lead to innovative and emerging career paths, students can prepare themselves for graduate or professional programs.
The INDS degree offers three unique advantages over other more conventional degrees:
- It provides the opportunity to combine multiple disciplines and fields of interest into one major that encourages thoughtful engagement with diverse subject areas related to the human experience. INDS majors work with faculty advisors to develop a customized series of courses—including research opportunities, seminars, and internships—that align with their goals, talents, and vision for their future.
- It allows students who have pursued credits in several different disciplines to combine them into a single degree that may better fit their desired career path and professional and/or graduate school interests. In fact, an INDS major can choose courses aligned more closely with specific professional goals than some traditional majors. For those students faced with changing majors late in their educational journey, the INDS degree can also offer the opportunity to graduate on time.
- It offers flexibility in terms of course delivery that responds to the complexity of today’s academic world. For traditional students, the degree offers a multitude of traditional academic concentrations to choose from but pursuing online concentrations is possible as well.
