MEEN 320 - Engineering Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics

4 Cr. Hrs.

This course concentrates on the analysis of rigid bodies as a prelude to design.  Its coverage of statics―the study of forces on bodies at rest―includes vector algebra; resultants of force systems; analysis of force systems in equilibrium; free-body diagrams; distributed forces; internal forces; application to trusses, frames and beams; analysis of systems involving friction forces; determination of centroids, centers of gravity, second moments of areas, moments of inertia; and the method of virtual work.  Its coverage of dynamics―the study of the motion of bodies―includes the relation between forces acting on rigid bodies and the changes in motion produced; translation; rotation; motion in a plane; kinetics of particles and rigid bodies; solutions using the principles of force, mass and acceleration, work and energy, and impulse and momentum; and an overview of the analysis of vibrations.
