Recommended Course Sequence

Admission to the theatre department is by audition/interview only. Theatre audition requirements for the B.F.A. in Acting include the performance of two contrasting one minute monologues and an interview.  Conditional acceptance into the department may be given; in this case, the student must show proficiency during the first semester in theatre courses by obtaining a 3.0 or higher and must audition again during the semester to become a theatre major.

The B.F.A. in Acting is designed to give students the rigorous training necessary to begin work as professional actors or to be prepared for further study at the graduate level.  Students are offered courses designed to help them develop vocal and physical presence, imagination and concentration.   In addition, students are introduced to playwrights that span the theatrical cannon and are encouraged to develop a facility for the language and sensibilities of multiple time periods.  Students are given the opportunity to explore and incorporate the acting techniques of many different theorists including Constantin Stanislavski, Uta Hagen, Sanford Meisner, Viola Spolin and Michael Chekhov among others.  They are given opportunities to perform in the classroom and in main-stage productions and to receive feedback from peers and faculty mentors.  The major is intended to release and nurture the creative spirit in the individual theatre-artist through improvisation, intellectual stimulation and faculty mentorship.

No grade below “C” in a course required for the major or minor (including cognates and specified electives) will count toward satisfying that course requirement. This policy does not refer to general education requirements or elective courses.
