A critical look at the historic role of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in realizing and undergirding such groundbreaking public policies such as the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, and the creation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) - from the great New Deal to the Green New Deal. This course focuses on the complex interactions among scientific developments, technological change, social values, and governmental activities. Implications for impact on contemporary challenges in digital technologies, economic growth and development, biomedical innovation, national research, risk and uncertainty, science advice and science diplomacy, sustainability, and urbanization.

Prerequisite(s): CON 3XX or Permission of the instructor
